Anne-Mie van Kerckhoven
Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven (AMVK), born 1951 in Antwerp, Belgium, studied graphic design at the Fine Arts Academy of Antwerp. Since the early eighties, she has produced extensive paintings, drawings, works on paper and synthetic material, as well as short videos and animations. Her work combines feminist issues with themes of machine-fetishism, exploring relationships between art, cognition, politics and social issues. Her collaboration with Brussels' Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, where she studied brain functions and the unconscious, positioned her within a tradition of artist-scientist partnerships aimed at advancing society.
In 1994, AMVK wrote: 'My installations deal with topical problems of contemporary survival related to the restoration of impaired functions of the central nervous system. The fundamental principles underlying the work of the brain, which enabled it to function for many years without interruption, today command the interest of experts not only in philosophy and science, but in art as well. This is because these principles can be utilised to make survival mechanisms more reliable.'
Her work examines invisible forms of self-organization within systems and their internal logic. Her drawings and collages, often set in interior spaces, depict futuristic interactions between human and machine forms. In the 1990s, she transitioned from hand-made paper works to computer graphics. Text frequently accompanies her images, complementing her bold female figures like song lyrics. She remains active in Antwerp's experimental music scene through Club Moral (1981-present), a collaboration with Danny Devos.
