After his longstanding work with appropriated broadcast stills, Matthias Groebel turned to his own video camera in the early 2000s. Reflecting themes explored in earlier series such as Painted Faces (1988–2005), Raymond brings together Groebel’s interests in information systems, media communication, and the role of the human moving between the two; concerns that have become increasingly relevant today. The film’s soundtrack combines voice-overs generated by a CIA-designed artificial intelligence with the incantations of ancient egyption prayer.

file under religion, 2005
Digital Video.
10 min. 44 sec.

file under religion (2005) combines montaged footage from the artist’s own video tapes as well as found footage with audio lectures from various religious leaders, including Ron L. Hubbard, Hizb ut-Tahrir, Jim Jones, and Pope Cyril VI of Alexandria. Through this layering Groebel examines different belief systems, and their rhetorical structures. In particular, Hubbard’s “obscene dog” anecdote points to broader strategies of discipline and control within religious ideology.
